OC International Education - English Language Placement Into Academic Courses

The following minimum scores will be accepted for placement into English 101 (English Composition 1):

  • Duolingo: 101+
If the Duolingo test score is less than 101, the score will determine what level of Intensive English (levels 1-5) the student must be placed into at Olympic College.

If English Proficiency is demonstrated by one of following ways, the student will be eligible to take the college-level Accuplacer assessment (English/Math) test at home to qualify for placement into English 101 (English Composition 1):

  • TOEFL: 61/173/500 (iBT: 61 with no sub score lower than 15)
  • IELTS: 5.5 (no band lower than 5.0)
  • STEP-Eiken: Grade 2A /Grade Pre-1
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE): 49 overall, 56 writing
  • Other equivalent examinations at OC Testing Center for English skills and placement levels.

Secondary Education Certificates:

  • Official high school completion diploma from accredited institutions in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom or the United States indicating a passing score in English.
  • Denmark: A minimum grade of 7 in A-level English and 10 in B-level English (new scale); grade of 11 in English in Stream B, Technical Path
  • Finland: High School English grade 8 or higher
  • Germany: Gymnasium/Abitur of 7 or higher in LF classes; without LF, a grade of 10 or higher
  • Netherlands: VWO: 6 or higher; HAVO: 7 or higher; MBO: 7 or higher
  • Nigeria: Completion of Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) with a score in English of C6 or higher
  • Norway: High School English grade of 4 or higher
  • Sweden: Upper Secondary School: VG
  • Singapore: Completion of N level or higher
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE): 46 overall, 49 writing
