Olympic College is accepting Duolingo English Test for direct placement into English 101 and college courses


Olympic College is announcing a new policy for the 2025-2026 academic school year that will begin in the Fall Quarter of 2025. Olympic College used to offer a free English language proficiency test to evaluate international students, but that is no longer being offered.

Now, international students are being asked to take the Duolingo English Test to receive an evaluation of English proficiency. The standard cost of the test for 2025 is USD $65.

Students should first get a better understanding of the Duolingo test by doing some research online. They can learn how to prepare for the test on the Duolingo blog. https://blog.duolingo.com/duolingo-english-test-readiness/

When they are ready to take the Duolingo English Test, they can go to the Duolingo web site to take practice tests and then purchase real tests. https://englishtest.duolingo.com/applicants

The Doulingo English Test will determine one of the following:

  1. A score of 101 or more - Allows the student to place directly into English 101 and can take college courses.
  2. A score of less than 100 - Determines what level (Levels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) of Intensive English (IE) the student must be placed into.

If students need to enroll in Intensive English (IE) courses at Olympic College, they need to reach Level 5 and complete it before they qualify to take English 101 and college courses

Other English Proficiency Test scores, such as those for IELTS, TOEFL, and Pearson, may determine if the student may take the College-Level Accuplacer English/Math Assessment Test, which will determine which level of English and math the student may take. Olympic College will help international students take this test online at home.

English placement into college-level academic courses Click for printable pdf The following minimum scores will be accepted for placement into English 101 (English Composition 1): Duolingo: 101+ If the Duolingo test score is less than 101, the score will determine what level of Intensive English (levels 1-5) the student must be placed into at Olympic College.
