Summertime offers paradise for international students at Olympic College

The combination of gorgeous weather, natural beauty, and cultural gems makes summertime an unforgettable season

International students who attend Olympic College in Bremerton, Washington during the warm Summer months are treated to some of the best experiences that the Pacific Northwest has to offer. During the Summer, the region experiences clear, warm days (75 °F - 85 °F, 24 °C - 29 °C), which is a welcome break from the cloudy, rainy days that is common most of the year. The locals appreciate the abundance of rain, because that means the Summer scenery is painted with green and decorated with a colorful floral palette. With the scenic beauty of two nearby national parks, the Olympic National Park and Mt. Rainier National Park, some of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world are accessible to international students of Olympic College.

Hiking

There are beautiful trails all over the region, but some of the best scenery can be found on the trails of the Olympic National Park and Mt. Rainier National Park.

Hiking in Olympic National Park

If you drive for two hours northwest from Bremerton, WA, you will reach the well-known scenic spots in the Olympic National Park. You can hike among the trails on Hurricane Ridge and view the majestic peaks of the Olympic Mountains. You can soak in the natural hot springs of Sol Duc Hot Springs. You can enjoy water sports in the crystal clear waters of Lake Crescent.

Hiking in Mt. Rainier National Park

If you drive for two hours southeast from Bremerton, WA, you will reach the visitor centers of Mt. Rainier National Park. This includes the tourist centers at Paradise and Sunrise. Mt. Rainier is one of the tallest mountains in the world, reaching an elevation of 14,410 ft (4,392 m). Because of its height, the mountain has snow year-round. Visitors can even build a snowman in August.

Water Activities

Being surrounded by water, including the Puget Sound, lakes, and rivers, it is natural that the local people gravitate towards water activities during the warm Summer months.

Stand up paddleboarding

These water activities include swimming in fresh water or salt water. A popular destination for swimming is Alkai Beach Park in West Seattle. People can also enjoy boating, kayaking, canoeing, and standup paddle boarding (SUP). Summer is also a good time to go fishing, crabbing, and digging for clams and oysters.

Culture

International students can explore the culture of the area, including the quaint charms of the local towns like Port Orchard and Poulsbo, as well as the attractions of the big cities of Seattle and Tacoma.

The Washington State Ferry offers affordable, convenient access to Seattle, Washington

Olympic College students walk from campus (15-20 minutes) to the Bremerton Ferry Terminal to catch a ferry to downtown Seattle, Washington. There are two types of ferries available. The Washington State Ferry carries cars and passengers and takes an hour to cross the Puget Sound. The Kitsap Fast Ferry carries passengers and crosses the Puget Sound in only 30 minutes.

What this means to international students is that they have convenient access to everything that the famous city of Seattle has to offer. Seattle is known for its history and culture. Students can visit the iconic Pike's Place Market, where they can shop for fresh seafood, produce, arts, crafts, and all types of products. Near Pike's Place Market is the first Starbucks, which opened in 1976. Students also enjoy visiting Chinatown and catching a Seattle Mariners baseball game at T-Mobile Park.
