Intensive English (ESL) Program
Olympic College's Intensive English program (ESL) is designed to prepare international students who do not meet the English Proficiency requirements required to study in college courses in American institutions. Its effective and practical approach is designed to advance students in a short time. The program is taught on a quarterly (3 months) basis by highly skilled instructors. Some Intensive English (IE100) credits count toward the Associate of Arts degree. The program includes:
- Grammar & Vocabulary
- Reading & Writing
- Listening & Speaking
Olympic College’s Intensive English program ensures that all international students, regardless of English proficiency level, has the opportunity improve their English in an immersive environment, so they can qualify to take English 101 and college-level courses in the USA.
Intensive English has 5 levels (Levels 1-5), with students completing Level 5 qualifying to take English 101 and college level courses. New international students must take an approved placement test (Duolingo, Accuplacer) to determine which level they will start at.
Intensive English is taught for an entire academic quarter (3 months), and the coursework consists of 18 credits per quarter. The weekly schedule is taught over 4 days per week, with Grammar & Vocabulary being taught two hours per day, Listening & Writing being taught one hour per day, and Listening & Speaking being taught one hour, three days per week.
The three classes are:
Grammar/Vocabulary (10 credits)
Reading/Writing (5 credits)
Listening/Speaking (3 credits)
In addition to classroom time, students will have access to:
- Free in-person and online tutoring
- English conversation partners
- Academic success and education plans
- Dedicated academic advisor
Within these classes we have a diverse number of activities, including groupwork, presentations, traditional worksheets, games, conversation practice, note-taking, online research, interviews, pronunciation drills, essay composition, etc. The idea is to prepare the students for various learning activities and modes they will encounter in different types of college classes. However, the focus is developing the language skills most necessary for academic English and college composition.

Conversation Partner Program
The Conversation Partner Program is a resource offered by Olympic College to International and ESL students. It is organized by the Multicultural Office and International Education & Study Abroad. it is a program that is designed to support the practical usage of English and improvement of English language proficiency. International students are paired with volunteers from the domestic student body. It is a great opportunity to share culture and build friendships.
With this program, international students can:
- Practice English speaking and listening
- 1 hour weekly with a native English speaker
- Learn about different cultures
- Make cross-cultural friendships
- Develop listening skills from a different perspective
